PRELIMS:

The first stage is the prelims stage which comprises two papers of 100 marks each and consists of only objective-type questions. The first paper is on general studies, which, besides covering the general civic aspects of the country, covers topics like History, Geography, Economy, Polity, Sciences, etc. There is a strong case of Current Affairs for HCS. Besides state-specific questions, Haryana GK for HCS is also asked. There is no negative marking. The second paper is on the optional subject, and the candidate can choose from various optional subjects. During preparation for the exam, the student must focus on speed and accuracy.

MAINS:

After clearing the first stage, the aspirant qualifies for the Mains exam. The Mains exam consists of a paper on General Studies and two others on optional subjects. The candidates select the optional from the list provided by the commission. A few combinations of optional subjects are prohibited, therefore, they must be kept in mind while making a choice. The exam also comprises compulsory Hindi and English papers. An essay paper is also a part of the Mains examination mix. All these papers are subjective in nature.
