17 April 2023: Bailey Bridges

Context:
In the Kaziranga National Park, the Army may assist in constructing Bailey bridges.

Bailey Bridge:

  • A Bailey bridge is a specific kind of prefabricated, transportable truss bridge. It was created by the British in 1940–1941 for use by the military in the Second World War.
  • The benefit of a Bailey bridge is that it doesn’t need to be assembled using heavy machinery or specialized tools. The steel and wood bridge pieces were so small and lightweight that they could be transported by trucks and put in place by hand without the use of a crane.
  • Tanks can be carried on the bridges without any issues.

Kaziranga National Park

  • More than 70% of the One Horned Rhinoceros in the world live in the Park. The park is thought to include 2,613 rhinos as of the 2022 count. Additionally, Kaziranga boasts India’s largest tiger population density.
  • In accordance with the Wildlife (Protection) Act of 1972, it was designated a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1950 and announced as Kaziranga National Park in 1974.
  • In 1985, it was designated as a World Heritage Site. BirdLife International recognizes it as an Important Bird Area.

About Rhinoceros

  • Large herbivorous mammals known as rhinoceroses can be recognized by their distinctive horned snouts.
  • The rhino has five species and eleven subspecies, some of which have two horns and others just one.
  • The grasslands and floodplains of eastern and southern Africa are home to both white rhinos and black rhinos.
  • Greater one-horned rhinos live in northern India’s marshes and southern Nepal’s rain forests.
  • Only a small portion of the Malaysian and Indonesian marshes and jungles are home to Sumatran and Javan rhinos.
